Very simply, the client is the one who pays. The narrator can be the client, but often, the client will choose a specific person in the family (e.g., a parent , a spouse or a sibling) to tell either the family story or their personal story. As one narrator said in the preface, "This book has been a gift, not only because my daughter...and her husband...literally paid for it to be written as an 80th birthday present, but also because all of the work on it has been a treat for me." The narrator literally narrates the story in a series of interviews, which are recorded, transcribed, edited and shaped into a narrative. The story is in the narrator's "voice". There can be multiple narrators, if desired. Both narrator and client read drafts and the final proof, making editorial choices. The client is the one who "signs off" on the final proof before printing.
Every project is different, and of course how long it takes to complete depends on the scope of the project. My largest project so far resulted in a 285-page book. The 80+ hours of interviews and subsequent editing/formatting/design and production took just over two years. Projects that are smaller in scope obviously take less time; although some smaller projects can spread out over many years if the engagement of the client or narrator is intermittent. Vacations and life events happen!
